Things I Happen To Think About (Part 1 of 2)

January was a great month, but it was crazy. I had a baby, and I’m starting a new business venture with my buddy Chris Stevenson. I’m watching my son Andrew run amuck and just be a happy boy. I have a new office Manager, Jessica, who doesn’t know how neurotic I can be (but don’t tell her). I would also like to welcome Suzanne Evans who is going to be consulting me on my new business model.

Here are some issues that I have been really thinking about in my life and in my business. I have made so many mistakes in the past and want get this business venture (which I will talk about soon) right because it can mean a lot of money, a lot of fun and good times on the road with my buddy Chris Stevenson and my best friend Patrick.

1. Create an experience around what you do. If you have ever been to a professional sporting event, you know that it’s not what happens at the game or on the field or on the courts, it’s about the whole experience. Getting settled in your seats, watching the players come out, cheering, buying overpriced food, watching the national anthem, watching the half time show, etc. Whether you’re a lawyer, doctor, or even a dry cleaner around the corner, give your clients an experience. Here’s the caveat: you can create a great experience, but the experience is nothing without a good product. You can have the best half time show and the best food, but if the team is crappy, then the experience doesn’t mean a thing.

2. Focus on the process. A couple of months ago, I read an article by James Clear, and it was one of the best articles I’ve read. Clear writes that instead of focusing on the goals, focus on the process. The process is going to get you to your goals. By nature I am a dreamer; I always have my head in the clouds. One of the problems with being disabled is it takes more effort for me to execute the necessary fundamentals in order to reach my goals. In the past, instead of focusing on the process, I focused on the goals—and that hurt me. I’m obsessed with Clear’s words after reading his article. One of the reasons I’m excited to work with Suzanne is she created a powerful process that she will teach me as well. If I only accomplish one New Year’s resolution, it’s focusing on becoming obsessed with executing the process—thanks James!

3. There is never a great time to start achieving your goals. In early November, my manager Linda found a new opportunity that was better for her and her family. I could have put off hiring someone until January with the justification that nobody works during the holidays, but I wanted to hit the ground running (no pun intended) (well, maybe a little). By hiring Jessica in December, I had the opportunity to really work with her, hang out, and explain what I really wanted (and now she doesn’t know what she’s in for). What else…oh yea, I had a baby. When I told my buddy Arie about the plans for my business, he said “ are you nuts!?” But I figured it would take a couple of months to ramp up anyway, and I am so excited that I don’t want to wait. I will still have time to hang out and cuddle with my baby, but I don’t see any harm in working 10 hours a week on my dream. Do you?
